"Design for the World represents a large number of designers (graphic, product, architectural, etc.) who want to use their experience and creativity to help people in need. They want to make available their skills to those who most need them, beyond the confines of the consumer market. "
WHY DESIGN?
"Design is closely identified with consumer products and services, and is usually considered irrelevant to people in the third world, in emergency situations or in situations of social exclusion.
In fact, design is the process through which the visual, material and spatial environment is created. Designers are trained to ensure that the world we live in is consistent with human needs.
For big parts of the world’s population, these needs are very basic: they involve disaster relief, health, education, development. Many organisations around the world try to deal with those needs. In most cases, they do not recognize the contribution that design could make to improve their ability to achieve their objectives more efficiently, effectively and economically.
The objective of Design for the World is to identify areas where professional design can make a difference, and mobilize design professionals to work in those areas. "
HISTORY
"Design for the World was founded in 1998 by the world’s leading international design associations ICOGRADA (graphical design), IFI (interior architects) and ICSID (industrial design), with the support of the Barcelona Design Centre.
Since 1998, hundreds of designers have supported our organisation and participated in our projects as volunteers."
"We work for people in need, all over the world –individuals or groups who we can assist by improving the design of their physical environment including the objects they live, work, study or play with. These are the people who seek better living conditions, better tools, better information –but who cannot afford the solutions offered in the normal marketplace. Through innovative design we hope to offer these people affordable and sustainable solutions.
These people will often be living in the developing world, especially vulnerable groups like refugees, the elderly, slum dwellers, people living with disabilities and children. But they can also be individuals or groups living at the margins of our so called “developed societies”. "
