Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, National Design Awards

The National Design Awards were conceived by the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum to honor the best in American design. First launched at the White House in 2000 as an official project of the White House Millennium Council, the annual Awards program celebrates design in various disciplines as a vital humanistic tool in shaping the world, and seeks to increase national awareness of design by educating the public and promoting excellence, innovation, and lasting achievement. The Awards are truly national in scope–nominations for the 2009 Awards were solicited from a committee of more than 800 leading designers, educators, journalists, cultural figures, and corporate leaders from every state in the nation.

The National Design Awards is one of the few programs of its kind structured to continue to benefit the nation long after the Awards ceremony and gala. A suite of educational programs will be announced this summer in conjunction with the Awards by Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum’s award-winning Education Department, including a series of public programs, lectures, roundtables, and workshops based on the vision and work of the National Design Award winners

Can design students help make the design domains more visible?

Design suffers from a lack of recognition because people cannot grasp what it is. What is design? Designers have been debating that question for years but there is no satisfactory answer. Also, it keeps designers‘ potential clients in ignorance. A major step will come when designers are able to make design visible at a glance and show what design can achieve economically and socially. If a drawing is worth a thousand words it must be possible to draw a chart, a map of design outcomes, organised by domain? Could design students make design visible in this way?

THE GREEN GOOD DESIGN AWARDS 2010

DESIGN FOR A BETTER WORLD NOW, Deadline November 1, 2009

The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design (link aqui) and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies have joined forces on two continents to present
an innovative and challenging new public program: GREEN GOOD DESIGN.
GOOD DESIGN™ was founded in Chicago in 1950 by Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Edgar Kaufmann, Jr. to promote and foster a greater public understanding and
acceptance for Modern Design.
In 2010, six decades later, this new edition of GOOD DESIGN aims to bring a parallel public
appreciation and awareness for an equally revolutionary design approach—a new
design thinking led by a current generation of visionary architects, designers, urban planners, corporations, governments, individuals, and private and public institutions for a design and
a public environment based upon the ideals of energy conservation; the reduction of toxic waste and greenhouse gases; the diminishing dependence on fossil fuels; and a sensitivity for waste, pollution, and the depletion of the world’s energy resources. This new design
approach centers on the idea of repairing our worldwide environments with sustainability and for total ecological restoration.
Now in turn and in 2010, GREEN GOOD DESIGN's goal is to bestow international recognition to those outstanding individuals, companies, organizations, governments, and institutions—together with their products, services, programs, ideas, and concepts—that have forwarded exceptional thinking and inspired greater progress toward a more healthier and more
sustainable universe. (full document here)

A New Map for Design / by Paola Antonelli / June 3, 2009

As the focus of design shifts from the production of finite goods to a practice of experimentation, ideas take precedence over products.

in (http://seedmagazine.com/content/article/a_new_map_for_design/)

Earlier this spring, manufacturers and designers from all over the world were shipping their wares to Milan to prepare for the Salone del Mobile. Anybody involved in design knows this is the most important rendezvous of the year—or at least it used to be, when design meant mostly furniture and objects. Designers anticipate meeting new talent and inspiration; they seek out curators, writers, teachers, students, and, of course, each other—this is a chance to meet with their peers and trade war stories. It’s hard to tell in advance whether Milan will be blooming with wisteria or gray, rainy, and dreary at this time of year, but the event is inevitably alive with the sound of design. The Salone is to design what Cannes is to film: the most useful and most productive yearly trade meeting. But is the future of design here?

Milan still represents a big red dot in the geography of design, but design is changing rapidly, and so are its maps. There are myriad forms of design, many of which don’t require movement of materials and artifacts; only curiosity, an internet connection, and the ability to seek, learn, and synthesize from other fields and cultures. These mutants are the future of design and the place to find them is not at big design trade fairs, but rather in interdisciplinary gatherings, pluralistic exchanges and, especially, in certain schools. Programs like the Design Interactions at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London or the Department of Design at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) are trying to merge poetry and beauty with advanced technology. A crucial contemporary effort was pioneered, of course, by such groundbreaking centers as the Media Lab at MIT, the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at New York University, and the Knowledge Interaction Design Laboratory (KID) at Tokyo University. However, the newer initiatives at RCA and KAIST are attempting an even more daring synthesis of digital media, this time not with art, but rather with design, which was not a priority before (despite what KID’s name might imply).

Since the industrial revolution ushered in the modern idea of design, different poles have anchored design, attracted designers and intermediaries, and concentrated cultural and technological production. The manufacturing plants themselves, which vertically integrated all aspects of production and marketing from design to distribution, were the first. The great Josiah Wedgwood, whose groundbreaking 18th-century company was recently sold and is in danger of being obliterated, is the archetype of such a manufacturer. This model persisted until after World War II, when the poles began to shift. Companies then began to subcontract most of the actual construction, while they continued to handle the pre- and post-production phases themselves. This is still the model used by either very big companies such as Herman Miller or Steelcase, or smaller companies producing objects in different materials, each of which requires dedicated plants and technologies. Even in that context, however, the geography of design shifted. Whereas subcontractors once tended to be located in specific areas such as Michigan, California, or north of Milan, today they are spread all over the world.

Just as the landscape of manufacturing has changed, so has the conference scene. Milan’s Solone has been joined on the map by a number of fairs and salons that make up smaller red dots, including London (in September), Tokyo and Kortrijk, Belgium (in October), Paris and Cologne (January), and Berlin and New York (May). Several opportunities now exist for people to meet and do business, and new forms of design that have, for instance, multimedia and interfaces as their focus, have entered the mix. Other gatherings not traditionally considered “design,” such as Ars Electronica in Linz or TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) in Monterey, have begun competing for designers’ attention and money.

Moreover, the tough financial situation and dwindling travel funds; the increasing number of resources and opportunities available online; the ease of movement from digital design to digital production that renders prototyping almost unnecessary until the moment of distribution; the shrinking of the luxury industry, where much of this type of design resides; the increased sensitivity to the footprint caused by air travel; and especially the massive shift of the design profession from making things to proposing models, visualizing complexity, and building scenarios, are all working together to further endanger this latest design world map. What is important now is the production of ideas: The poles have become lighter and more immaterial, having rid themselves of much of the baggage of material production. The geography of design has transformed; systems are now built around schools rather than industry.

Design education’s path since the second half of the 19th century is a fascinating and rather unexplored subject. That may be a result of the protean definition of design—that vague noun always in need of a modifier to make complete cultural sense, whether it is “graphic,” “furniture,” “automotive,” or “fashion.” Moreover, examples of schools entirely devoted to design are rare, as design often figures as a division within schools devoted to the arts or, as with polytechnic schools, to architecture and engineering. The best contemporary design schools are the most important centers for the production of ideas, having earned preeminence over the R&D departments of corporations and other think tanks by progressively shedding the focus on the immediate production of finite artifacts to privilege experimentation. As a result, they usually flourish where students and teachers can find interdisciplinarity and pluralism, in areas with a strong cultural identity—be it the arts, engineering, architecture, technology, craft, or in any other discipline from which designers draw on a daily basis—that have connections and access to other cultural poles, such as departments of universities, museums, galleries, and so on. Along with KAIST and the RCA and several other institutes in London—always a great design incubator— many vibrant schools have created new centers of design gravity around the world, from Eindhoven’s Design Academy in Holland, to Bezalel in Jerusalem.

The dismantling of a static geography of design is not over yet, however. As the forever far-sighted Neil Gershenfeld explained previously in Seed (Is MIT Obsolete?), the system of schools and other educational institutions is becoming wider and more open. It will hopefully foster the development of identity and personality, the ultimate pointillistic and open-source destination of the design trajectory.

Alain Findeli

Alain Findeli is Full Professor at the School of Industrial Design of the University of Montreal where he has been teaching for about 30 years. Trained as an engineer in physics (INSA, Lyon) and researcher in materials science (IIT, Chicago and Polytechnics, Montreal), he reoriented his career and interests toward the human and social aspects of engineering, technology, and design (M.A. in Architecture, Montreal; Doct. in Aesthetics, Paris). He concluded his extensive study of the history of design education in his book 'Le Bauhaus de Chicago: l'oeuvre pédagogique de Làszlò Moholy-Nagy' (1995). His current research topics and recent publications cover more general philosophical issues of the theory and practice of design (logic, aesthetics, ethics) as well as some key pedagogical aspects of design research education. He is the founder and current scientific and pedagogical director of the Master's program in "Design & Complexity" in Montreal. As a Guest Professor at the University of Nîmes (France) in 2006, he is planning to introduce a research agenda on the most recent developments of design theory and methodology (service and social design, sustainable public projects, quality of place in rurban living environments). What do we Lack?

The urgency in the discussion and formulation of concrete proposals in face of the current economic system’s incompatibility and of the preservation of the planet requires a careful observation of our lifestyle.
It is not about just respecting the future generations anymore, ensuring the same use of material and natural assets we had the right to, but about a search for new actions and thinking models. We would have already had a curious inversion of values, when changing the focus: And what if the development degree of the countries were measured not by the industrialization index and the GDP, but by the production of solid residues, pollution and energy consumption? Architect Bernard Rudofsky suggested us that if we opened our eyes a little wider than their accustomed aperture, if we could observe without ethnic bias, we would look at our own environment with a more critical awareness.
Considering the Brazilian reality, anthropologist Darcy Ribeiro, defined that the opening of our horizons will only occur: “when we prohibit the past and present of forming the future corresponding to its being and its bias. We shall only accomplish our own potentialities by projecting ourselves the future we want. This will only occur when we develop lifestyles and ways of consumption which are not governed by profit, but fundamentally intended to answer the needs of our population.”
The design represents a relevant role in the promotion of this change, overall when we consider that it deals with satisfaction of the needs of the body and spirit. In this sense, the question is not what is still to be designed or redesigned, but what do we lack?
In academic experiences and pedagogic practices involving Design students with a local context of poverty and exclusion, the emerging problems and issues reveal us that there is still much to be accomplished. One of the first aspects is the insertion of excluded or marginalized populations in a social equity and visibility level. In many cases, the very notion of community must be rethought, for its territorial occupation, many times, does not record traces of memory, belonging and voice. “I” is almost inexistent. "Us” is unknown.
Talking about a sustainable planet requires the existence of an actual collective, marked by continued actions, by the involvement of the civil and governmental organizations, without the weight of assistencialism or indifference. The work of Victor Papanek, Alain Findeli, Bernard Rudofsky, among others, contains a historic legacy and a broad critical debate indicating the crucial insertion of the design in the construction of such common future. This is what many of us, design students throughout the world, long for.

VOLVO OCEAN RACE

After a frenzied night of battle, Telefonica Black had fended off all challenges for her lead and was still in control at the corner of the ice box. And by 10:00 ZULU this morning, the fleet had covered about two thirds of the 175 mile eastward trek along the southern edge of the exclusion zone. Behind Black, Ericsson 4 was up to second and Telefonica Blue had powered back into contention. All the gaps had opened as each boat got round the corner and extended, while those behind were still sailing upwind.

The wind was blowing from the south, around the mid-teens, and providing some fast miles. There was a surprising amount of north-to-south leverage for a short, straight-line eastward dash, with PUMA and Delta Lloyd investing in a position to the south, looking for a Gulf Stream pay-off (...ver aqui)
