Está aberto até dia 1 de Fevereiro de 2010 o período para o envio de resumos para apresentação na conferência "Engineering, Social Justice and Peace" a realizar em Agosto de 2010 em Londres.

"The Engineering, Social Justice, and Peace (ESJP) network are delighted to announce their Sixth Annual International Conference, to be co-hosted with the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (The RSA) in London from August 4th to 6th 2010 in collaboration with the Higher Education Academy Engineering Subject Centre and Engineers Against Poverty.

Abstracts for presentations are welcome which:

1. Critique of existing or past practices and presentation of just alternatives especially in relation to the engagement of engineers with the communities, which they serve.
2. Critique of or alternative forms of equitable engineering organization and management.
3. Examples of pedagogies, curriculum or community service learning which promote socially just engineering practice.
We also welcome newcomers and students who are interested and have not yet begun to work in this area. Introductory sessions will be designed with this group in mind.

The international interdisciplinary ESJP network formed in 2004 and has grown in its passion and mission to create a knowledge base, support network, scholarship, and educa­tion to promote the education of engineers who promote social justice and peace. The first five conferences have been held in North America and we are particularly pleased that this meeting will be the first in Europe where we hope to grow our network.

The RSA through their ‘Design and Society’ program, whose aims are very similar to our own, are excited to work with us and we are developing a two day meeting which will include papers, interactive discussions, creative workshops and the chance to network with RSA Fellows in an evening reception with an invited speaker.

When: From noon August 4th 2010 to 1pm August 6th 2010.

Where: The Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (The RSA) at 8 John Adam Street, London, which is close to Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus and next to the Thames. The closest tube stations are Charing Cross and Embankment.

Cost: £150

Accommodation: If you are on a budget, accommodations for as low at 26 pounds per night for a single can be found here. For accommodations closer to the conference venue albeit more expensive, check out the Strand Palace.

Agenda: We are pleased to announce the call for papers at the present time. We would like to invite submissions of abstracts of between 100 and 200 words, to include a summary of the content of your paper and how this relates to the themes of the conference. It should also include a short statement of your proposed presentation style. We offer the following suggestions for styles. We will not have any formal lecture presentations. [Note this will not affect travel funding. Institutions who require a paper to be presented at the workshop do not impose presentation styles].

Short presentation (ten minutes max) followed by discussion around key questions (30 min in total)
Workshop (one hour)
Facilitated round table or panel discussion on key issues (30 min)
Any alternative interactive style of presentation such as forum theatre (one hour)
Deadline for abstracts Feb 1st 2010

Special issue International Journal Engineering, Social Justice and Peace (IJESJP): We are delighted to announce that we will launch the IJESJP with a special issue focused on the 2010 annual conference. We will invite full papers to be submitted one month after the conference.

Vencedoras do concurso "Liberdade de Movimentos"

A aluna Melissa Monteiro do curso de Design da Universidade Lusíada do Porto ganhou, com o projecto "Adapt" (imagem de cima), o concurso "Liberdade de Movimentos" da Roche para o desenvolvimento de vestuário para pessoas com artrite reumatóide.
O prémio do público foi para uma outra aluna da mesma universidade - Isabel Correia -, que apresentou o projecto "Lawless" (imagem de baixo).
Ambos os projectos foram desenvolvidos no âmbito da disciplina de Design do 1.º ano, leccionada pela designer Lígia Lopes.
Só e pena que não se consigam encontrar em parte alguma imagens mais detalhadas dos projectos. Ainda assim, damos os parabéns às alunas vencedoras e à professora que as orientou.

"Happy Basin" - Purificador de água

Os designers Woo sik Kim e Duck soo Choi desenvolveram um novo dispositivo para filtrar água de modo a que fique potável e assim permita que seja bebida ou usada para higiene pessoal.
O "Happy Basin" fica pousado sobre a água e, ao ser empurrado para baixo, faz com que a água passe através dos filtros localizados no fundo do dispositivo. Ao passar pelos filtros a água tranforma-se em água potável que fica acumulada no contentor.

"Design é Preciso"

Quem esteve no congresso e-design teve a fecilidade de ver a apresentação deste projecto que, tendo "parentes" noutros países, fazia falta em Portugal. A iniciativa , apoiada pelo Centro Português de Design, é da Filipa Pias, designer, e a entidade promotora é o ISEC.

A apresentação do projecto foi feita por esta designer e pela Isabel Jonet, presidente da Federação Portuguesa dos Bancos Alimentares contra a Fome e fundadora/presidente da direcção da Entrajuda. Para além de explicar a importância de um projecto deste tipo, a Isabel Jonet teve uma participação particularmente importante por contar, na primeira pessoa, como a sua visão do design e dos designers mudou. Foi preciso a Filipa Pias para mostrar à Isabel Jonet que o design não é "exclusivo", não é "fútil", não é sinónimo de objectos caríssimos para elites. Foi um óptimo testemunho e um óptimo trabalho da Filipa Pias. Design é preciso, assim como é preciso que sejamos todos um bocadinho Filipa Pias para mudar os pré-conceitos existentes sobre o design, o trabalho dos designers e o seu papel na sociedade.

"Design é Preciso" é uma rede social onde quem queira ajudar se pode inscrever como voluntário e desenvolver projectos cujos enunciados são lançados no site. Quem precisar de design[ers] põe o anúncio do projecto que precisa no site e os voluntários concorrem com ideias para resolverem os problemas apresentados.

O Guy Harris reparou nos problemas que muitas pessoas têm em comprar ajudas técnicas/produtos de apoio por causa dos preços a que são vendidos. Imaginou então que seria uma boa ideia ter um site onde se pudessem comprar e vender ajudas téncicas em segunda mão.
Para além desta boa ideia, o Guy Harris teve uma outra. Qualquer pessoa que tenha contacto com outras pessoas com deficiências e incapacidades sabe que estas pessoas criam muitas vezes as suas próprias ajudas técnicas e métodos para superar dificuldades do dia-a-dia. Por isso, o site tem uma secção chamada "Thinking outside the box", destinada a que os utilizadores do site partilhem as suas ideias. Infelizmente esta secção ainda não tem nenhuma contrbuição, mas talvez com o tempo mais pessoas fiquem a saber deste site e ponham por escrito (e em imagem) as suas ideias.

"Spent" looks at why, when scientific research shows that more stuff doesn’t lead to more happiness, humans are driven to endlessly acquire

Why do some people pay a 100,000 percent premium for a Rolex when a Timex is such a sleek and efficient timepiece? Why do others kill themselves at work just so they can get there in a Lexus? Why do we pay 1,000 times more for designer bottles of water when the stuff that gushes from our taps is safer (because it’s more regulated), often tastier, and better for the planet? And how do we convince ourselves that more stuff equals more happiness, when all the research shows that it doesn’t?

A Engenharia para Desenvolvimento e Assistência Humanitária (EpDAH) está a preparar para o dia 5 de Novembro, uma sessão de apresentação do Núcleo do Porto e dos seus projectos de voluntariado nacionais e internacionais. Esta actividade terá lugar na sala B008 da FEUP, às 15:30.

A EpDAH (Engenharia para o Desenvolvimento e Assistência Humanitária - Associação para a Cooperação) é uma instituição portuguesa sem fins lucrativos, constituída com o apoio da Ordem dos Engenheiros, que visa promover acções conducentes à sustentabilidade da exploração dos recursos naturais, à equidade e dignidade social e à preservação da identidade cultural dos povos, articulando o exercício dos diferentes ramos da Engenharia em prol da cooperação e da assistência humanitária, em contextos desfavorecidos e em situações de emergência.

Para além de fazer uma apresentação do projecto ColorAdd e de todos os recentes desenvolvimentos tendo em vista a sua implementação, terei o prazer de ter na mesa um Daltónico que nos contará na primeira pessoa como se adaptou com o facto de não conseguir visualizar correctamente as cores, que dificuldades encontra no seu dia-a-dia e como encara as vantagens de aplicação deste projecto.

Estudos de caso no interior da Classe Média

Localizada na área da Antropologia do Consumo, a presente obra visa contribuir para uma compreensão abrangente dos fundamentos familiares e pessoais da procura do consumo, elucidando sobre a sua utilização enquanto meio de expressão e comunicação de identidades familiares e pessoais. O processo de consumo é aqui analisado enquanto prática cultural capaz de transmutar as mercadorias produzidas em massa em bens singulares detentores de propriedades significativas particulares. Concretizando um dispositivo metodológico qualitativo que articulou entrevistas em profundidade e etnografia, a investigação concretizou-se sobre um universo de estudo composto por 24 famílias, pertencentes às “novas classes médias” e residentes na cidade do Porto e áreas adjacentes num raio de 50 quilómetros.

Applied Semantics – An hybrid perspective on meaning

Abstract:
In this talk I illustrate a foundational and applicative framework where cognitive semantics and formal semantics can actually converge in the task of modeling ‘knowledge contents’. The main aim of this approach is to enhance tools and solutions provided by “knowledge technologies”. I will introduce the notion ofCognitive Matrix as “the network of static and dynamic structures underlying cognition”:
Cognitive Matrix supplies a nested structure to the flow of information that starts from the environment and, passing through the private mental layer of agents, ends in linguistic forms. Machine- understandability of knowledge strongly depends on the creation of computational models of the world, so-called "ontologies"; nevertheless, ontologies cannot capture the dynamic aspects of meaning construction. The goal of this seminar is to present an hybrid perspective on meaning, both on the side of theoretical foundations and technological solutions.

Welcome to the website of Design Connexity (here), the European Academy of Design’s 8th International Conference.
The Design Connexity conference took place on 1st, 2nd and 3rd April 2009 and was hosted by The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland.
The conference was attended by over 140 delegates from over 25 countries from around the world.
This website contains an archive of the conference; including the call for papers detailing the conference themes, downloadable refereed conference papers, videos of the keynote speakers and a gallery of images taken during the event.
The next European Academy of Design conference will take place in Porto, Portugal in spring 2011.

About the Design & Emotion Society

Our mission: the Design & Emotion society raises issues and facilitates dialogue among practitioners, researchers, and industry, in order to integrate salient themes of emotional experience into the design profession.
What we are

The Design & Emotion society is established in 1999 as an international network of researchers, designers and companies sharing an interest in experience driven design. The network is used to exchange insights, research, tools and methods that support the involvement of emotional experience in product design. The daily board is based in The Netherlands.

Although the initiative originated from the discipline of product design and design research, through the years practitioners from other design disciplines such as interaction design and branding design, contributed and benefited from the network and activities.
What we do

The activities organised by the society offer a platform where professionals meet. Besides occasional initiatives, we organise the biannual International Conference on Design & Emotion as well as Design & Emotion workshops.
Why we do it

In the years before the first Conference on Design and Emotion (Delft, 1999), the founders of the society experienced a growing interest in the topic. They also observed however, that although many people in several disciplines were actively studying the possibility of involving users’ emotions in the design process, these initiatives were often isolated from each other. As the founders believed that the various parties would strongly benefit from learning about their mutual approaches, they decided to invite the pioneers in the emerging field to join them for the first Conference on Design & Emotion.

Today, after a series of successful conferences we observe a world wide acknowledgement of the significance of the area of design and emotion. Different sub movements arise and critical reflections to experience driven design emerge. We acclaim this lively course and willingly accept the challenge to guide and stimulate the ongoing dialogue.

O seminário destina-se a profissionais de museus, designers e profissionais da área das necessidades especiais e pretende analisar e discutir, pela primeira vez no meio museal, o desenvolvimento de sinalização acessível, atendendo as necessidades do público em geral e do público com necessidades especiais em particular. DANISH DESIGN TO IMPROVE LIFE

Design to Improve Life is a designation and a domain of design created and developed in Denmark – with the world and for the world. With its humane focus, Design to Improve Life is a direct outgrowth of Danish design traditions developed between the 1930s and 1950s, with an interest in empowering people by creating surroundings that answered their needs and wishes.

THE BIGGEST AND THE ONLY!

Workshop - Interiorismo Ferroviário e Subsistemas - Indústria Nacional

Uma dezena de empresas, durante cerca de 10 a 15 minutos cada, irão divulgar as suas competências e mais valias com potencial de aplicação nesta área.

A fechar a sessão, a partir das 17h, serão apresentados os resultados do "Alstom AGV Design Award Portugal", a qual culmina um projecto nacional levado a cabo com a colaboração do DesignStudioFEUP, envolvendo Escolas Superiores de Design que foram desfiadas a imaginar o interior de um comboio de Alta Velocidade á luz da Cultura Portuguesa.

EIDD - Design for All Europe

EIDD - Design for All Europe is a European network, founded in Dublin, Ireland in 1993 with the name of European Institute for Design and Disability. The original aim of the network, to use design to achieve the inclusion of disabled people in society in European countries, has since been reinforced with inclusion of a more mainstream approach, enhancing the quality of life through Design for All. The name change in 2006 reflects this development.

EIDD - Design for All Europe is now a federation of National and Corporate Member Organisations in 22 European countries. With a strong inter-disciplinary approach, the majority of members are professionals in design-related fields.

Pelo seu “esforço extraordinário” em prol da Diplomacia internacional e pelo Desarmamento Nuclear, a Academia Sueca, demonstrou hoje a imprescindível consciência global dos problemas globais e o reconhecimento da justeza das grandes causas cívicas em prol da Paz no Médio Oriente, na condenação da Tortura, na Defesa dos Direitos Humanos… porque Obama trabalhou já, abrindo caminhos, no tão escasso tempo que leva a sua governação, com a Rússia, Cuba, África, Palestina, Israel, Irão, Tibete, no sentido de cimentar a Diplomacia indispensável à sobrevivência da Humanidade, da preservação da Diversidade, do combate à crueldade e à tortura… Guantanamo, Palestina, Desarmamento Nuclear e a luta cívica pela Saúde, a Educação e a Segurança social para todos no seu país, cujo rosto da pobreza e da exclusão ele assumiu.
